The Vehicle Dynamics group is offering a PostDoc position in Vehicle Dynamics of Heavy Combination Road Vehicles with Electrically Propulsion on Towed Units. The research is motivated by the problem of CO2 emissions and energy consumption. High Capacity Transport, HCT, (long) road vehicles show large energy savings, 10-30% and reduction of Total Cost of Ownership up to 30%. Hence, HCTs are allowed in more and more countries. However, towing units intended for HCTs will be over-powered if they are used in non-HCTs. The proposed solution can be described as scaling the propulsion for HCTs.
The envisioned solution is to add electric propulsion on the towed units. (Converter) Dollies are strategic such units in combination vehicles. An electrically propelled dolly enables additionally 10-20% energy savings for an HCT vehicle with diesel-propelled towing unit.
The following aspects are important to well utilize electrically propelled dollies:
The vehicle energy management needs to be predictive, typically over 1-10 km ahead.The motion actuation must be distributed over the HCT, requiring an addition to today’s signal interface.The trade-offs between safety and energy saving must be considered, by distribution of propulsion and braking between axles on multiple articulated units, which affects lateral stability.An input to how the approval of HCT, based on Performance Based Standards, PBS, and Vecto, is needed to include electrically propelled dollies.
The research will produce test methods, both real vehicle testing and simulation.
The research will be carried out in the Vehicle Dynamics group with a network involving truck manufacturers, trailer manufacturers, authorities and other universities, both in Sweden and internationally. Cooperation at Chalmers is expected especially with the Mechatronics group and the test vehicle lab Revere.
The Vehicle Dynamics group is at the division of Vehicle Engineering and Autonomous Systems (VEAS) at the department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) at Chalmers.
Main responsibilities
Your major responsibility as PostDoc will be to pursue the research and development within the described research field. You will implement, test, and extend existing scientific ideas and concepts as well as invent and discover new ones, and to communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing at international conferences and journals. You will work with senior researchers. The position also includes teaching on MSc education level which includes supervising MSc theses.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
Qualifications
To qualify as a PostDoc student in the current project, you must hold a PhD in Vehicle Dynamics; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You should have excellent grades and the ability to plan and take responsibility for your work. You should be creative and like to put new ideas into practice. You should like to work in interdisciplinary projects and have the ability to discuss and communicate your work with people of different backgrounds. You should be a highly motivated person, with a strong curiosity and a genuine wish to constantly learn more and develop your skills and knowledge further in the fields of research and research communication.
The position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and, at least, basic Swedish. You must have excellent modelling, simulation and control skills for vehicle dynamics, including transport missions. Experiences in optimization (incl. nonlinear optimal control), Modelica and work in test vehicles are meritorious.
