Description
Department of People and Technology, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as PhD of Computer Science from January 1st 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years.
Description of the PhD project
Title: Decision support tools for Roll-on Roll-off vessels operations.
The PhD project is part of the ROROGREEN project funded by the Danish Innovation Fund. ROROGREEN is a project that aims at bringing Denmark a step closer to sustainable Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) shipping. The focus of the RORO green project is decision support tools for sustainable vessel operations and thereby reduce the fuel consumption of the used vessels. The project is a collaboration between Technical University of Denmark, University of Southern Denmark, and several companies. In the project advanced technological hardware such as cameras, drones, mobile robots, and sensors, for automated data capturing although, this part of the project is mainly completed by other parties some experience with sensors and data would be attractive. The collected data is in this PhD project cleaned and exploited by using artificial intelligence and optimization techniques for the development of decision support tools. A RoRo company will partake in the project as a living lab for the technologies and tools developed. This project will mainly focus on the shipping of unaccompanied trailers.
The part of this PhD position in the RoRo green project
The project aims at optimizing the industry operational and strategic planning. Data from sensors, drones and robots will in this part be cleaned and exploited using artificial intelligence and optimization techniques for the development of decision support tools mostly for load planning such as dual-cycling and stowage with the aim of reducing respectively loading time and trim while improving trim and satisfying stability. Moreover, uncertainty and prediction of cargo arrival patterns should be part of the project as well as planning before all cargo has arrived. In collaboration with companies the PhD student is to develop decision support tools for vessel planning aimed at the reduction of fuel consumption. Therefore, the PhD student is expected to carryout collaboration with industry and publish articles in high quality international journals within operations research, computer science and logistics (such as Transportation Research part A-D, Transportation Science, European Journal of operational research).
The Ph.D project aims at:
Analyze and develop decision support tools for vessel operations within the Roll-on/Roll-off industry which can reduce the fuel consumption. This should be executed using machine learning, heuristics and combinatorial optimization in collaboration with companies.
Application
The application should satisfy the points listed under the assessment section (see below). Please make sure all parts are submitted including a project description. For further information on the PhD project description contact Line Reinhardt at liner@ruc.dk.
