Description

DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, the section for Manufacturing Engineering has a vacant 3-year PhD position in the project 'Metal Microstructures in Four Dimensions'.

The project is supported by the European Research Council via an Advanced Grant.

It aims at:

Developing a universal laboratory based 4D X-ray microscope with potentials in the broad field of materials science and beyond.

Advancing metals research by quantifying local microstructural variations using the new 4D tool and by including effects hereof in the understanding and modelling of industrially relevant metals.

Responsibilities and tasks

The overall task of the PhD project is to quantify the effects of deformation induced local microstructural variations on nucleation of recrystallization. This theme is by far the most challenging within the field of recrystallization, but by the use of novel 3D and 4D experimental methods, a break-through in understanding is expected of both high scientific and industrial importance.

Are you interested in detailed characterization and analysis of metal microstructures and in achieving new critical information on hither-to unknown mechanism(s), perhaps you are our new PhD student.

Your work will involve 3D and 4D measurements using both laboratory and synchrotron X-rays, electron microscopy, metal (Al and steel) processing, quantification of local microstructural variations possibly using machine learning routines, automatic identification of nuclei, correlation analysis and crystal plasticity finite element (CPFEM) simulations.

This PhD project will mostly focus on conventional metals. The research will thus not only be of scientific interest but also of direct practical importance. The work will however also encompass a comparative investigation of nucleation within conventional and additively manufactured samples and as such address issues of this advanced manufacturing process too.

You will work in close collaboration with a group of senior scientists, technicians as well as Post Docs and PhDs all engaged in the ERC project 'Metal Microstructures in Four Dimensions'. A 3-6 month foreign stay at Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne to perform CPFEM simulations will be part of the PhD project. Also trips to international synchrotron facilities are to be expected.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

It would be advantageous if you have a good knowledge about:

Materials science in particular metallurgy

Crystallography

Data processing maybe including machine learning

Programming

Excellent English communication skills are essential.
