Information about the department and the research
At the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) we conduct fundamental and applied research in areas such as safety, energy efficiency and material optimization of sustainable technology solutions across all modes of transport.
The division of Vehicle Engineering and Autonomous Systems (VEAS) is one of seven divisions at the department. Our focus is on engineering of systems with applications in vehicles and robots. Our strengths are the knowledge of finding solutions to authentic problems, often with the aim to provide innovative solutions to problems of industrial and societal relevance, by means of theory, modelling, simulations, and experimental work. The division has 8 faculty members, 17 PhD students, and several post-docs and researchers. The main research areas are within energy-efficient, safe, and adaptive vehicles, and autonomous systems operating in unstructured environments.
At VEAS, the Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI) group is focused on intelligent conversational agents, autonomous robots, and automated transportation on road, rail, and sea, with applications in many different fields. Most of our projects involve biologically inspired computation, for example evolutionary optimization and neural networks. However, the group is niched towards interpretable and explainable approaches to artificial intelligence (AI), rather than the currently popular black box approaches. One of our main current topics is the development of an interpretable dialogue manager for human-machine interaction. We operate quite broadly, with applications in many different fields, e.g. human-machine interaction and mobile robotics with applications in, for example, health care, automated driving, automated rail transport, as well maritime applications. The successful candidate is expected to be able to carry out research in any of the fields listed above.

Research - The successful candidate will be expected both to contribute to existing projects in the group, and to formulate new projects to secure research funding for himself or herself, and others (e.g. PhD students and postdocs) in due course, all within the fields relevant to the AAI group. Your work may involve project management to some degree, as well as supervising students at master and PhD levels. A great degree of independence and initiative is expected, but also the ability to work as a team member in projects managed by someone else in the group.
Teaching - The successful candidate will be expected to participate in teaching on the master’s level in various functions, primarily as lecturer or examiner. It is possible that full responsibility for a new course in artificial intelligence will be given. Other responsibilities include to participate in the improvement of the AAI group’s courses and in continuing education.
The successful candidate will be expected to take part in leadership and administration within the department and/or the university. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia, industry and with society at large.

- A PhD degree in a field relevant for the position.
- A strong interest in interpretable approaches to artificial intelligence.
- A documented pedagogical track record in courses involving applied artificial intelligence or related field, as well as a documented track record regarding high-quality, independent scientific research, evidenced by publication records in high-quality journals and conferences.
- Strong and well-documented programming skills in at least one programming language.
- Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
- Previous research experience in projects related to intelligent conversational agents.
- Experience of PhD student supervision.
- A documented track record of successful grant applications.
- Programming skills in more than one programming language.

The position of Associate Professor requires scientific expertise that is considerably higher than that required for a doctoral degree (corresponding to admission as "oavlönad docent") and at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education, as well as a course in supervision of research students. External candidates are expected to complete these educational requirements within two years after employment.
You must be accustomed to teaching and be a skilled educator. For this reason, we place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio. Experience from performing academic research or qualified research and development in industry/the public sector is a requirement.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you must be able to teach in Swedish on the undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
