Description

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description

This PhD project aims to develop tribological models describing deformations inside and in-between different types of composite materials during pre-forming of flat layup to final geometry. The composite materials studied are suitable for high volume manufacturing of structural composite components for the vehicle industry. However, also recycled materials and bio-based materials may be included in the study. The aim is to develop improved simulation tools foreseeing wrinkle prone or weakened areas, to simplify introduction of new composite materials and to provide input to large-scale simulations used in industry

The work is highly experimental. Development of testing equipment, including measuring systems, is likely to become part of the work description. The PhD student will work on both polymer related issues as well as issues related to the properties and direction of the fibre material. Finite Element based simulations will be used to investigate the influence of the developed models on the manufacturing process outcome

The PhD student will work in a team with researchers from KTH, Luleå Technical University and industrial partners. We expect that the candidate has good collaboration ability, is analytical, and dedicated. Experience of work in research related projects in similar areas is beneficial

Third-cycle subject: Vehicle and Maritime Engineering

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Prof Malin Åkermo
