Description

Thesis WorkerDesign optimization of subsea dynamic high-voltage cable with Finite Element Analysis
Driven by society’s need to tackle climate change, renewable energy generation continues to grow. To reach out for new natural resources, such as wind, wind farms are now more often being installed offshore at sea, further off the coast. In such places, winds blow with much greater force and more frequently than on land. High voltage (HV) subsea dynamic cables are essential elements in the power collection and transmission from offshore wind farms to the shore, thus playing a central role in the renewable energy transition.
One of the key components of the subsea dynamic cables’ constructions is the metal sheath tube which acts as a radial water barrier to prevent ingress of water into the cable insulation which can lead to cable failure. NKT has developed an innovative corrugated radial water barrier solution that is designed to operate in extreme high-stress conditions. A dynamic cable is usually subjected to a complex loading history during manufacturing, installation and operation. The cable hangs in the water between the offshore wind farm and the seabed and have to withstands severe mechanical stress from currents, waves and the continuous movement of the floating wind farm. Therefore, designing reliable components is essential to prevent mechanical failure which can endanger the operability of the cable.
Thesis description
The objective of this thesis work is to optimise the geometry of the corrugated water barrier that potentially contributes to the better design of the HV dynamic cables. Some candidate materials are to be considered. The proposed main activities are summarized in the following points:
Literature survey that covers investigation of the mechanical properties of the candidate materials.
Develop/use finite element models of the corrugated tube to optimize the corrugation geometry against different loading conditions.
Compare the models with inhouse available experimental data.
Write the final report.
Qualifications and requirements
The required qualifications are:
Master student in Solid Mechanics, Material Science, Engineering Mechanics, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Physics or any related field.
Good knowledge of solid mechanics, material science and finite element method (FEM).
Good experience in using FEA commercial software, e.g. Abaqus.
Excellent command of spoken and written English.
