Responsibilities and Tasks
The Recycling Operations Officer is functioning as Designated Person within the context of the Garbage Management Plan of the ship. He/she will foster new ideas on how to improve the Garbage Management on board, save costs, raise compliance and reduce the amount of waste. He/she will be the point of contact for projects, ideas and provide input and feedback to shore side employees and crewmembers on the entire range of waste and recycling on board
Duties include (but are not limited to):
Has access to all relevant waste storage and collection locations, to all treatment spaces on the ship and all equipment
Has access to the Bridge and engine spaces for working purposes
Monitors correct waste segregation and conducts trainings on correct waste segregation, if necessary
Gives his assistance to internal and external auditors during environmental audits in conjunction with the Staff Captain
Gives his support to all crewmembers in finding a solution to garbage / garbage processing equipment related problems
Is carrying out the operational organization of garbage management on board
Verifies that all types of waste are properly managed, according to applicable laws and Carnival and company procedures, if necessary also works on procedures
Verifies that all types of waste are properly labelled when they are generated and are correctly kept until their landing, according to Carnival procedures and plans
Actively assists on board personnel and authorized external companies during waste landing, conducts inspections on behalf of the relevant shore side entities
Is supporting to correctly keep all documents related to waste landing, including the on board copies of the waste landing invoices, processes invoices and files disposal information on ports
Supports to monitor the correct management of hazardous materials on board, according to the requirements of Carnival and company procedures
Supports to check that all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) of hazardous materials used on board are available
Is supporting to train all personnel about the use, handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials
Reports to the Staff Captain
Safety Duties:
Facilitate a work environment that supports a successful safety culture
Enforce and promote safety procedures in the team/department under supervision of the Staff Captain
Qualifications and competence
The minimum educational background shall be a specific technical vocational education or higher
Practical experience in waste management and/or waste water management, best in the maritime industry or strong affiliation to sustainability topics, f.e. through relevant vocational training or university studies
