Åbo Akademi University invites applications to a fixed-term position as Professor in the Law of the Sea at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economics, starting 1st August 2022 or as agreed. The position is fixed-term for four years. The professor is appointed to build the competence in the law of the sea within the strategic profile area The Sea and to reinforce the interdisciplinarity of the other strategic profile areas as well as the education in law in general at ÅAU. The appointment is financed with means directed to the Sea obtained from the Academy of Finland.

The strategic research profile area The Sea is tied to the Baltic Sea region. Research within the profiling area is currently conducted within the research areas environmental and marine biology, public administration, and industrial management. The mission of the profiling area is to find science-based solutions to enable coexistence between marine and maritime life and the modern society that promotes sustainable growth globally. The overall ambition with the profiling area The Sea is to establish a globally leading top marine research unit, focusing on the Baltic Sea and the Nordic maritime areas.

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION AND THE QUALIFICATION CRITERIA

The position is sited at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economics within the subject Public Law. The Professor of the Law of the Sea will also participate in teaching and research within Public International Law and Private Law.

The importance of the position in relation to the ÅAU strategy, focus areas and research profile is strongly tied to its connection to the Baltic Sea region. The duties of the position include teaching and research in law of the sea and maritime law, as well as other transportation law and environmental law, in close cooperation with the profiling area The Sea. Teaching is given at all levels of education and may include themes from international public law, EU law, Nordic, and Finnish contexts.

The position also covers development of the profiling area, including development of methods for interdisciplinary research, as well as legal teaching within various study programmes connected to the profiling area. In light of the connection to the profiling area The Sea, legal research related to marine environmental protection, shipping and marine management is of particular relevance and importance. Collaboration between various subjects thus constitutes an essential part of the position's field of activity, in that the Professor of the Law of the Sea is expected to participate in national, Nordic and international collaboration in his or her field.

The responsibilities of a professor include scientific research, research based tuition, leading and developing research and teaching activities, raising funding for research and participation in national and international cooperation within one's field of responsibility in accordance with the Universities Act (558/2009). A professor is required to have a doctoral degree, solid scientific and formal pedagogical competence, the ability to lead research projects and obtain research funding, experience in international research and leadership skills.
The language requirements at Åbo Akademi University are defined in Section 78 of the University Act (558/2009) and in the Åbo Akademi University internal language instructions (accepted by the University Board 25th February 2010). Native Finnish citizens are required to have excellent proficiency in Swedish and sufficient proficiency in Finnish. Foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens are exempt from the requirement to have skills in Finnish. Oral and written skills in Swedish and English is necessary for managing the duties of the position successfully.

SALARY AND WORKTIME

Teacher's and researchers have a total working time of 1612 hours per year.
