About the position
The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a 100 % position as PhD Research Fellow in Geosciences from 01.04.2022.
The position is located at the Department of Natural Sciences and Environmental Health and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Bø in Telemark.
The employment period will be three years of full time with no teaching obligations, and there is a premise for employment that the PhD Research Fellow is enrolled in USN’s PhD-program in Ecology within three months of accession in the position.
About the PhD-project
The advent of new close- and near remote sensing techniques are making detailed study of complex terrain features possible, revealing new information about the past. Simultaneously traditional remote sensing data are improving, satellite sensors get higher spatial and temporal resolution, and several countries, including Norway and Finland, now provide public access to high-resolution elevation data from airborne LiDAR scanning. All this new data is opening up new venues for geomorphological research but also necessitates methodological studies testing the strengths and weaknesses of the new data and how they contribute to improved (geomorphologic) mapping and understanding of the past.
In this project we will take advantage of these new remote sensing techniques to study the geomorphology of an area in northern Finland. The area has a wide variety of well-preserved landforms, revealing a complex geological history associated with the rapid melting of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet ice sheet during Early Holocene, a history that is not yet well understood. Well-developed dune fields in the same area give further information on the climatic and geomorphological developments in the area after the deglaciation.
A better understanding of the processes and subsequent evolution of a landscape associated with a rapidly melting ice sheet will improve our prediction of modern glaciers and ice sheets response to global warming and the accompanying landscape adaptation. In this project we will use a combination of existing and new high resolution digital terrain models, aerial photographs, and sedimentological field studies, to reconstruct the Quaternary geological history of the area.
The supervisors will be Assoc. Prof. Johanna Anjar, Prof. Hans Renssen, Assoc. Prof. Endre Før Gjermundsen (all from USN) and Prof. Helena Alexanderson from Lund University.
Qualifications
Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent higher education qualifications with a focus on geoscience or related subjects. The degree must be accomplished before application deadline.
The candidate must have the ability to work independently and at the same time have the motivation to share knowledge and take part in team work. Personal suitability for the post will be emphasised.
It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Ecology within three months of accession in the position. For admission to the Programme a weighted average grade of B or higher is usually required.
Co-operation between staff members is an integrated part of the working atmosphere at the University of South-Eastern Norway. The candidate must be motivated and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively within a team and in a collegiate manner to formulate and realise common objectives.
The successful candidate should have:
A strong background in Quaternary geology or physical geography
Previous experience with GIS
Previous experience with glacial geomorphology and/or glacial sedimentology
