Antennas Tehnical & Team Lead (Principal RF Engineer)-00VTL
Description
Cobham SATCOM is in a very exciting phase with many opportunities being pursued. Our strategy is focused around moving into new markets and segments within existing markets, leveraging our core technologies and long history within Maritime and Land-mobile satellite communication. At the same time, we make sure to maintain our market leading position in our current markets. For us to succeed with the strategy, we are currently expanding our organization, especially the R&D team.
For our Global Hardware Development Organization, we are recruiting for an Antennas Technical & Team Lead position (Principal Antennas/RF Engineer) to strengthen the very core of our satellite- and radio communication products, i.e., the antennas and microwave components area.
Working in Cobham SATCOM means having many opportunities to grow professionally as well as personally. We have a strong team covering all disciplines, so you will be able to work directly with other HW disciplines, as well as SW- and Mechanical engineering colleagues. We focus on high-quality products but apply a cost-conscious mindset.
The role:
You will have 4-6 direct reports and will be responsible for facilitating cross-team knowledge sharing and collaboration with our product core teams in Denmark and California. These teams also include antenna design capabilities, but mostly on an application-level. You will be responsible for antenna designs (reflectors, feed horns, arrays, radomes, patches) and microwave components (waveguide filters, OMTs, Diplexers, etc.) across all of our satellite communication terminals and gateways. Most of the current design work is done at L- and Ku/Ka-bands, but we also span radio frequency bands (MF/HF/VHF) as well as S- and C-bands. The natural next step will include the higher Q/V bands.
You will be responsible for delivering development strategies and project estimates to project management, and afterwards ensure that we deliver according to our promises. You will do this with your team and through a continuous improvement of our development processes and best practices as well as participation on design reviews across projects. Furthermore, you will work with your team to shorten our development cycles through maximizing reuse of designs across products. You will be the one, assigning tasks to your team members and making sure they have the right capabilities and tools to do their jobs.
This role is part of the Global Hardware management team, which counts six people acting as team leads for other HW engineering disciplines and technology managers. You will report directly to the Global Lead for Hardware Development.
You should expect the line management portion of this role to account for approximately 20% of your time, while the remaining 80% will be hands-on development work, including antennas optics design, simulation work, system design, working with sub-suppliers, supporting customers and regulatory agency qualification testing as well as troubleshooting RF issues for production and quality control teams.
The role is based at our headquarters in Kgs. Lyngby, just north of Copenhagen, Denmark. Alternatively, you can also choose to be located at our new facilities in Aalborg, Northern Jutland, Denmark. You should expect some travel activity to certification test facilities as well as to our US development site in Concord, California.
About you:
You likely come with a master’s degree in electronics engineering where you have specialized yourself within antenna design and/or RF electronics combined with several years of experience from product development. Furthermore, you come with a basic understanding of RF electronics, including RF system/link budgets, LNAs, HPAs, mixers, filters, etc. You will have a strong and experienced team around you, so you do not need to be an expert in all areas but should be familiar with them, to be able to make decisions and provide direction.
Furthermore, you possess a strong sense of ownership and responsibility of own tasks.
What you need to succeed:
Proven and demonstrated technical leadership in the antenna development area.
Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to interface with senior level executives and customers.
Solid knowledge of measurement techniques using RF test equipment from L-band frequencies up to Ku/Ka-band frequencies.
Strong knowledge of RF/Microwave principles and system and subsystem-level analysis methodologies.
May have functioned in an advisory or leadership role for a project/program to provide direction and guidance to less experienced professional staff.
Good communication skills and an ability to convey highly technical issues and messages to senior management.
Minimum qualifications:
MS in Electrical Engineering, Physics or equivalent.
Solid understanding of electromagnetics and antenna physics / optics.
8+ years of experience from designing and testing microwave antennas, including how to operate RF lab equipment, i.e., VNAs, spectrum analysers and signal generators.
2+ years of experience with one or more of the following software tools: HFSS, CST, GRASP, WaspNET, FEKO or XFDTD.
Speak fluent English as this is our corporate language.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience with designing and testing electronically steered array antennas (AESA).
Familiarity with type approval testing of satellite user terminals (standards related to antenna patterns, etc.).
Waveguide based component design experience (OMT, Diplexer, Waveguide filter, etc.)
Matlab, VB or LabView experience.
Please be advised that successful candidates must be willing to present a criminal record and go through the mandatory security clearance prior to commencing employment with Cobham SATCOM.
About Cobham SATCOM:
