Offshore Work in Scandinavia
There is a rich tradition of offshore work across Scandinavia and with the close proximity of the North Sea, there are always a lot of roles for residents of these countries.
Qualifications And Requirements in Offshore
Due to the nature of the work, pretty much every job that Scandinavians will do offshore requires medical certification and safety courses to be completed prior to applying and obtaining an offshore job.
The majority of these roles will require you to speak your native language and ideally have a high working knowledge of English too.
Rules for taxes are different from country to country, in Norway for example, if you are onshore for 6 months you are required to pay taxes locally.
Life offshore can differ from job to job, but all work is vastly different to your typical 9-5 office job. For example, shifts are typically around 12 hours, and work is often done in rotations, with ‘x’ days on and ‘x’ days off.
You could be on a rig from 2-4 weeks at a time, but the amenities, especially in Scandinavian rigs and offshore projects are high standard and meet EU regulations.
Examples of Offshore roles
Examples of roles for Scandanvians in offshore vary from employer to employer but the main categories on a rig can be classified as these:
Marine
These roles focus on helicopter logistics, deck operations, and handling rig moves and positioning.
Drilling
Focused on the oil drilling operations, these jobs are often very technical and require a lot of attention and focus.
Maintenance
This team is in charge of ensuring the rig is maintained and runs correctly, this can be anything from electrical operations, drilling equipment, machinery, or technical aspects of the rigs.
Administration
On a traditional rig there are a whole host of jobs that don’t come under the main roles, but as admin or support roles. These can be everything from health and safety personnel, catering teams, cleaners, and other support staff.
These are just a few routes you can take as a Scandanavian wanting a job offshore.
