Description

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully financed PhD study starting February 1st, 2021, or as agreed. The successful candidate will be offered a four year employment at Chalmers at the Division of Combustion and Propulsion Systems. The employment will be extended with half-a-year when at least 10% teaching duties are fullfilled. Join our team so that we, together, can accellerate the transition towards sustainable transport solutions!
Your research will mainly be experimental: Single cylinder engine tests and analysis to generate, investigate and evaluate a hydrogen internal combustion engine with emissions aftertreatment system.Information about the dívision
The division of combustion and propulsion systems is one of seven divisions at the department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences. Our commitment is to generate knowledge and methods that the society needs to be able to develop: highly efficient and ultra-clean internal combustion engines, taking exhaust after-treatment into account, and that use renewable/low carbon fuels and are a part of electrified/hybridized propulsion systems. In other words, to enable transport without toxic emissions, through:
educating top level engineers and scientistsconducting groundbreaking spray, combustion, engine and propulsion system researchstrongly couple experiment and simulationserving as a forum in which industry and academia can meet.
Project description
There is a need to discover and develop new technology solutions for vehicles, that reduce GHG gas and health deteriorating emissions. Solutions that are not dependent on a fossil energy source. Especially for heavy duty trucks, we need solutions that minimize battery need and maintain the driving range. A hydrogen internal combustion engine with near to zero CO2 and other emissions could be a viable, sustainable alternative, and it is the goal of this project to investigate if this is feasible, how this can be achieved and what the environmental impact will be.
The proposed project includes an investigation of the boundaries, potential and design parameters of a heavy- duty propulsion system consisting of an internal combustion engine operated on hydrogen and an emissions aftertreatment system. We investigate the emissions from a hydrogen engine including an investigation towards the effects of different hydrogen purity levels and other contaminations of the hydrogen-air mixture. This knowledge will be used to develop dedicated catalysts and an emissions aftertreatment system with the objective of reaching near zero tailpipe harmful emissions.Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. Your research will be supervised by well-reputed senior researchers at the department.Contract terms
The position is a full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 4,5 years full time PhD study. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to up to 20 percent of working hours. The salary for the position is specified in Chalmers general agreement for PhD student positions.
Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry or Physics. Knowledge in combustion engines, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics is considered essential. Knowledge of chemistry and measuring methods is seen as an advantage.
Collaboration, teamwork- and communication skills are considered important.
You like to work independently and you plan and think strategically. Analytic language ability is relevant and you understand complicated oral communication and written documents. You are able to write documents of high quality.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Englishas well as an ability to plan and organize the work involved. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to communicate in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses. Our offer to you
Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the dynamic city of Gothenburg.
